Megan Rooney chez Thaddeus Ropac

A painter, sculptor, and performance artist, Megan Rooney was born in 1985 and grew up between Canada and South Africa. Now based in London, she is the focus of an exhibition at Thaddeus Ropac’s Marais gallery from March 11 to April 22, 2023.

The exhibition ‘Flyer and the Seed’ presents a series of canvases, most of them large formats painted from autumn 2022 onward. With their color and movement, the works naturally evoke Turner’s paintings or Monet’s late works, but also the postwar lyrical abstraction of artists such as Zao Wou-Ki, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler. Beyond their abstract character, the pieces at times seem to include anthropomorphic or vegetal elements. Lines—referencing Paul Klee’s research (as the artist mentions in an interview, see 17:30)—also help structure the compositions while giving them a certain dynamism.
